Project description
Many technical processes are described by partial differential equations. Here, it is important to optimize these processes. This leads to optimization problems in an infinite-dimensional setting.
As model problem, consider the minimization of a functional
g(y)+j(u)
subject to the elliptic equation
-Δy + d(y)=u on Ω, y=0 on Γ
and pointwise control constraints
ua ≤ u ≤ ub
Despite its simple structure, this problem offers many difficulties and challenges. Due to the non-linear elliptic equation this optimisation problem becomes non-convex.
If one has computed solutions yh and uh of discretized versions of this problem, the question arises
Are yh and uh indeed an approximation of a solution of the infinite-dimensional problem?
Due to the inherent non-convexity of the optimization problem, this question by far non-trivial. The project want to give answers to this question with information that is computable from the numerical solution. The methods, which will be applied, are based on techniques from optimal control, finite element methods, and eigenvalue computations.

I have seriuos interest in Johann Radon Institute for Computation and Applied Mathematics (RICAM) in Linz offer. I would love to be that PhD student in the field of optimal control and optimization.
I am a Nigerian, lecturing currently in my State College of Education, I hold M.Sc. Applied Mathematics from University of Calabar, M.Sc. Computer Science from University of Port Harcourt, B.Sc. in Industrial Mathematics from University of Benin. I also hold Post graduate Diplomas in Education and Computer Science. The title of my M.Sc.(Applied Maths) is Öbservability in Linear Control Systems” In the College I teach Differential Equations and other Calculus courses. A programmer of International Standard. I am very versatile in C/C++, Pascal, BASIC, Visual BASIC, working very hard to add Java and Oracle to the list. At international level, I am a member of Dream in Code and a member of Java World. During my first degree, I really excelled in Numerical Analysis and Optimization. With my good backgound in Control theories and optimality; good programmer, I have no doubt that I would easily scale through the project. My strongest point is that I believe in hard work and hardly bows out before a challenge.

I am gera workie from Ethiopia, Africa. I have a Masters degree in Applied Mathematics from Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia and I am lecturer in Mekelle University, Ethiopia. Now I am eager to advance myself to contribute something for my country and satisfy my great interest.
So if it is your will, would you allow me to attend in any Applied Mathematics field of study especially in relation to optimization Mathematics and Industrial Mathematics in Post Doctoral position?
However, I have the interest to upgrade in any related PhD program.
I am looking forward for your response.
Sincerely yours

I am a lecturer at college of Natural and computational science in Mekelle University, Ethiopia. I graduated from Addis Ababa university in Applied Mathematics specializing in Differential equations. During my MSc study, I have got full exposure to many theories and principles of Mathematics that will definietly help me in any advanced study of Applied and industrial Mathematics. I am also familiar with some software applications like LaTex and Mathematica. Because there is an acute shortage of well trained teachers and researchers in the country in general and in the college in particular, I have a keen interest to pursue my study in any field of Applied Mathematics to contribute my part to my country.
Yours truly,

Presently I am studying at University of Nottingham, my second MSc in Numerical Techniques for Finance. In addition, I hold an M.Tech Degree in Computer Science/ Mathematics (Mathematics), from Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger-State, Nigeria. I researched on Optimal Contol, Project Tittle: (The Analytical Comparison of the Optimal Controls of the Source and Sink of Three-Dimensional Energized Wave Equations, (Optimization Theory))
Also also hold a B.Tech(Hons) Degree in Pure& Applied Mathematics, Project Tittle: ON THE APPLICATION OF QUEUING PROCESS(OPERATION RESEARCH).
Quest for further knowledge(PhD) took me to your school web-site,where I read about your research interest, and thought working under you as a teacher and a PhD student will afford me the opportunity of a good research considering your wealth of knowledge especially in the area of Applied Mathematics/ Statistics.
Also in addition, I have expanded my M.Tech project to come up with a Phd thesis, document attached herewith.
Further information will be supplied when and if required.
Thanks.
