With support from its “Special Research Fund” (BOF), Ghent University wishes to support university research groups or research centres in developing countries in their aim to grow into excellent research centres by upgrading local academic personnel. Therefore Ghent University grants PhD scholarships to promising PhD students from developing countries who wish to carry out half of their PhD research at Ghent University and half in a university in a developing country. No restrictions are imposed on the field of research, nevertheless preference will be given to topics that are relevant for development. Relevance for development measures the degree in which the action of development corresponds with the expectations of the beneficiaries, the needs of the country, global priorities and the policies of partners and donors. This program is limited to universities and research centers in developing countries (see country list in the call) with which Ghent University is already cooperating or has cooperated in the last 5 years. It is the Ghent University promoter who has to present evidence of this previous cooperation. These grants take the form of a so called “sandwich” scholarship: the candidate obtains a scholarship for 24 months to work within a span of 48 months on an alternating basis on the PhD at Ghent University and at the university or research center in the country of origin of the candidate. The proposals must be submitted by a promoter at Ghent Universityand a supervisor at the local institution.

Eligibility:

To be admissible for this call, all of the following requirements must be met: Candidates need to come from – and have the nationality of – a developing country (see list); There must be a guarantee that the candidate will be able to work on the PhD project at the partner university. This implies that there must be a local PhD supervisor at the partner university or research center. Also a written statement is requested from that supervisor or the university authorities stating that the candidate is either a student or a staff member of this university and will be sufficiently exempted from teaching or other assignments as to be able to fully concentrate on the PhD research. This statement should also mention that the candidate receives/received a local scholarship or salary when working on the PhD in the home institute.

Scholarship Application Deadline: 8 March 2012

The PhD fellow will be part of the project “Strengthening the adaptive capacity of institutions in fisheries” funded by The Norwegian Research Council as part of the Programme “Climate Change and its impacts on Norway”(NORKLIMA).

The position is available from August 15th for a period of 3 years.

Project description

The successful candidate will work in a research team that analyzes the feedbacks between climatic, social and ecological forces with the aim to strengthen the adaptive capacity of institutions that govern marine ecosystems, focusing on the Barents Sea ecosystem. Typical issues to be studied are (i) how informal institutions, such as social norms and cultural identity, influence behavior of individual fishermen, (ii) how formal institutions, such as government regulatory agencies, respond to environmental change and its effect on resource users, (iii) how biological complexity, such as the risk of a resource collapse induced by climate change, should be reflected in management plans.

This project will be carried out in collaboration with the Fisheries Centre of the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada; the Stockholm Resilience Centre, University of Stockholm, Sweden; MARICE, Reykjavik University, Iceland; Dalhousie University, Halifax, Canada, and the University of Tromsø, Norway. Thus, this project combines global insights from fisheries around the world with valuable Nordic expertise to meet challenges posed by a changing climate.

The applicant has the possibility to visit the Fisheries Centre of the University of British Columbia for a period of 6 months to work with leading experts on global and regional effects of climate change on marine biodiversity and fisheries. The Centre has a unique database comprising distribution maps, as well as ecosystem and catch data for more than 1,000 species. Additional shorter stays abroad with other partners to acquire complementary knowledge are also possible.

Qualification

We search for a candidate with an academic background in economics or econometrics who has a completed MSc degree (or equivalent) of excellent quality. Candidates must have strong quantitative skills and rigorous training in statistics or econometrics. Experience with STATA or other statistics software is a prerequisite. Further assets are strong analytical skills in the field of microeconomics, especially game theory, or familiarity with computational methods. Prior experience with environmental and resource economics or fisheries is an advantage, but we also welcome applicants from other economic fields. The applicant should have a keen interest to work in an interdisciplinary environment with scientists from different disciplines.

We also emphasize that we are looking for a candidate with good communication skills across different disciplines and cultural backgrounds, as well as good collaborative and organizational skills. A good command of English is required, because this is the working language at our institute.

Admission to the PhD program

International PhD Scholarship in Investigation of the impact of closed landfill sites on the environment at University of Central Lancashire, UK

Study Subject: Investigation of the impact of closed landfill sites on the environment
Employer: The University of Central Lancashire
Level: PhD

Applications are invited for a full-time scholarship available in the School of Built & Natural Environment. The scholarship is tenable for up to 3 years for a PhD (via MPhil route) [subject to satisfactory progress] and is open to international applicants only. UK/EU applicants are not eligible to apply. The scholarship will provide £15000 towards the cost of the International tuition fee over 3 years.

The project will focus on the impact closed landfills have on the environment. The inclusion of the heavy metals and persistent organics into the waste stream has resulted in toxic mixtures being buried. New European legislation has attempted to address the issue by restricting the use of certain substances.

However, this does not take into account the historic legacy. Within the electronic industry many compounds that have known health implications are being used as they are currently not being targeted by the EU. This is again added to the problem of contamination in future years. The research will undertake a study of these issues and recommend remediation activity to off-set the environmental impact. The research will investigate the leachate from selected landfills and consider the impact on the water catchment area with considerations to the ground water and surface water. The project will use a model approach (case study of a selected landfills within water catchment areas) in studying these impacts in relation to certain parameters. Applicants should have, or expect to receive a qualification equivalent to a high class UK honours degree.

Scholarship Application Deadline: 13 May 2011

PhD position in Electric Power Systems at KTH School of Electrical Engineering

Overview
KTH School of Electrical Engineering seeks a PhD candidate in Electric Power Systems Project title: Design, control and operation planning of Multi-Terminal DC Transmission Systems (MT-DCTS)

KTH is the largest technical university in Sweden. Education and research cover a broad spectrum within natural sciences and engineering, as well as architecture, industrial engineering and management, urban planning, work science and environmental engineering. There are circa 12,000 full-year undergraduate students, 1,400 postgraduate students and 3,100 employees.

The School of Electrical Engineering conducts research and education on the highest international level in Electric Power Engineering, Fusion and Space Plasma Physics, Telecommunications, and Networks, Information and Control Systems (NICS).

The scientific and technical activities of the Division of Electric Power Systems cover development and application of methods for analysis, simulation, and control of electric and integrated energy systems. The research activities in this division are divided into three subject areas, namely, power system dynamics and control, electricity markets and production planning, and power system network planning.

Background

Voltage Source Converters (VSC) can rapidly and independently control both active and reactive power. Furthermore, in a VSC-based Multi-Terminal DC Transmission Systems (MT-DCTS), the converters are functioning as ideal current sources in the DC-side (thereby parallel connections of several DC terminals should not pose any technical difficulties), and the change of the DC power direction is implemented by DC current reversal. Due to these characteristics, it is believed that by utilizing VSC-based MT-DCTS in a bulk power system, there is a great possibility of enhancing operational flexibility and controllability of the bulk power transmission, integrating large scale renewable energy sources at different locations, and future expansion flexibility.

From an economic, technical and research point of view, this project will mostly focus on the following questions and challenges:

With modern technology—for example Voltage Source Converters (VSC)—it is possible to build Multi-Terminal DC Transmission Systems (MT-DCTS), i.e., high voltage direct current systems that at several points connect to one or more alternating current systems. The controllability of the new technology is believed to provide great possibilities of enhancing the flexibility of the bulk power transmission system, which will improve the conditions for efficient electricity trading, improve reliability, facilitate integration of large-scale renewable energy sources at different locations, and increase the possibilities for future expansion of the system.

This project will study MT-DCTS both from a technical and from an economical point of view. The research will mostly focus on the following questions and challenges:

The topologies of MT-DCTS.

How should the hybrid AC-DC system be optimally operated concerning N-1 criterion (or other probabilistic methods,) congestion management, electrical losses and electricity markets?

Derivation of control strategies for converters to keep the DC power balance and to fulfill the hybrid AC-DC system requirements. What are the advantages and disadvantages of using local and remote information, respectively, for these control strategies?

What is the impact of adding primary frequency control signals in converters on the hybrid AC-DC system operation?

How can the primary frequency control between the asynchronous AC systems connected by MT-DCTS be coordinated?

Qualifications

Applicants should have a completed academic degree on master`s level in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics or a related field. Furthermore, good oral and written communication skills in English are required. To address its varied work, KTH aims to employ a diversity of talent and thus welcomes applicants who will add to the variety of the University, especially as concerns its gender structure.

Employment

Form of employment: Time limited.
Start date: According to agreement.

The salary follows the directions provided by KTH. The position includes 20% departmental duties.

Application

Application deadline: May, 9th 2011

Employers reference number: E-2011-0193

The application shall include a CV, a brief statement on why the applicant wishes to pursue PhD studies, contact information to three references, the degree certificate, and official transcripts of records.

The application should quote the reference number above and be sent by email to: 0193@ee.kth.se

in pdf format (only), with all documents merged into one single pdf-file, and with the reference number in the subject field.
