The Institute of Biomedical Technology and Technical Medicine at the University of Twente, Netherlands has openings for three PhD student positions for the project MIRIAM.

Research project description
Needle insertion is one of the most common minimally invasive clinical procedures. It is used for diagnosis, localized drug delivery, and tissue sample removal from tumours deep within the body. These procedures are often performed under the guidance of magnetic resonance (MR) images. For effective medical diagnoses and treatments, the needle must reach its intended target. However, tissue inhomogeneity, organ deformation, and physiological processes cause the needle to deviate from its intended path. In order to increase the targeting accuracy of needles and improve clinical outcomes, the goal of this research project is to develop:

Adaptive optics (AO) is used in large telescopes to compensate for disturbances in the atmosphere as well as vibrations of the telescope’s optical components. With the increasing dimensions of telescopes, up to 42m for the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT), the dimensions of the AO systems are increasing such that the computational complexity of the controller prohibits an (unstructured) centralised implementation.

The goal of this project is to design, implement and validate a fast and high-performance control algorithm on multi-core, off-the-shelf hardware to control a large-scale adaptive optics system for application in extremely large telescopes. The PhD student will evaluate several efficient AO control algorithms, including algorithms developed at DCSC, further optimise the computational complexity versus performance trade-off, and implement and validate the method on a multi-core AO demonstrator system. The project, which is funded by the ESFRI Consortium, is a collaboration between Delft University of Technology (Delft Centre for Systems and Control) and the University of Utrecht (Astronomical Institute).

Requirements

We are looking for a candidate with an MSc / PhD degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or the equivalent, with a strong background in numerical algorithms for control and signal processing. Experience with parallel processing is advantageous. The candidate is expected to further develop the research on fast and high-performance adaptive optics algorithms that has been initiated at DCSC, to validate these in a laboratory demonstrator and to publish his/her research in scientific publications. If you have already earned a PhD in a field relevant to this project, you are encouraged to apply for this position as a post-doctoral researcher.

Application Deadline 1 August 2010

FMRI is a fast developing technique that permits addressing core questions in cognitive neuroscience in the human brain. The future of this technique resides in pushing hardware to permit ultra-high field scanning at superior spatial resolution, developing advanced data analysis, and combining the technique with other approaches, including EEG, TMS, PET, as well as pharmacology and molecular biology. These goals are pursued by a consortium of 4 partners consisting of Maastricht University (Brain Imaging Centre), Research Centre Juelich (MR Physics), University of Liege (Cyclotron Research Centre) and Glaxo-Smith- Kline (Clinical Imaging Centre London). Funding comes from a Marie-Curie Initial Training Network grant.

Description

To advance research goals at the consortium, we are looking for applicants who

show a drive to investigate a core question in cognitive neuroscience which can be theoretical (e.g., perception, attention, memory) or more clinical in nature (e.g., dementia, neurofeedback in locked-in patients);

are motivated to use and/or help engineer cutting-edge methods of data acquisition (physics) and data analysis;

enjoy the (technical) challenges of working in an integrative, multidisciplinary environment. Relevant backgrounds include engineering, physics, mathematics, advanced statistics and data analysis, molecular biology, software programming, computational modelling, and cognitive neuroscience. The ideal candidate combines skills from several of these disciplines.

Our staff is composed of top-level academics from more than 20 different countries.

In 2007 the Amsterdam Business School received EQUIS accreditation from the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD) annual meeting. EQUIS, the European Quality Improvement System, is the leading international system of quality assessment, improvement, and accreditation for higher education institutions in management and business administration.

The ABS’ educational philosophy is characterised by small scale interactive seminars, workshops and case based programmes, all designed to stimulate active student participation. Excellent international students are attracted by the ABS’s two flagship programmes, the Amsterdam Master of Business Administration, known as the Amsterdam MBA, and the Master in International Finance (MIF). Both programmes are taught entirely in English.

Taught by faculty with extensive experience in both international business and academia, courses introduce students to the theory they need to understand the business world, the best methods of practice and the most recent developments in international business. The part-time and full-time students interact throughout the programme. The ability to work with different kinds of specialists with different nationalities is one of the most fascinating and useful experiences that can be gained from an MBA. The MBA curriculum provides broad coverage of the main functional areas in management: accounting, finance, marketing and sales, operations management, information systems management, law and human resource management. It also provides basic instruction in economics and quantitative analysis. The curriculum is highly integrative and will include courses in business policy and strategy. Beyond the acquisition of knowledge and technical skills the curriculum puts theory into practice by focusing on the personal development of participants through such competencies as decision making, teamwork, leadership skills, entrepreneurial potential, negotiation skills, communication and presentation skills.
