The Department of Humanities is delighted to invite applications for 15 MRes Studentships in 2010, as part of its annual Postgraduate Awards Scheme. Successful candidates will be awarded a full fee waiver, available from September 2010.

The MRes degrees are ideal preparation for students wishing to pursue doctoral studies, careers in professional research or teaching. The programmes are available for study over one-year full-time, with a part-time option. On completion students will be well prepared to commence work on a PhD and to finish this within three years. In some cases it may be possible to fast-track through a two year PhD programme which builds on the foundations provided by the MRes.

The Discipline of Social Statistics and the Centre for Census and Survey Research at the University of Manchester offer an MSc programme in Social Research Methods and Statistics. The programme provides a firm grounding in advanced quantitative methods, taught within an applied social science framework. The programme is designed to be accessible to non-statisticians yet more focussed than most of the existing Masters courses in social research methods. The MSc course offers relevant and marketable skills for a career in research and is recognised for PhD training by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). Modules are taught with an emphasis on hands-on training in the application of methods and software. The programme is available full-time over one year or part-time over two years.

Google is committed to helping the innovators of the future make the most of their talents by providing scholarships and networking retreats for computer science students with disabilities. This scholarship aims to help dismantle barriers that keep students with disabilities from entering computing, encourage them to excel in their studies and become active role models and leaders in creating technology.

Multiple scholarships will be awarded based on the strength of candidates’ academic performance and demonstrated passion for computer science. A group of Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD students will be chosen from the applicant pool. Applications will be reviewed by a committee of researchers and engineers. The scholarship recipients will each receive a € 7,000 (or equivalent) scholarship for the 2010/2011 academic year.
