The Geotechnology Department comprises four sections: Applied Geology, Applied Geophysics and Petrophysics, GeoEngineering, and Petroleum Engineering. Its research activities are strongly interdisciplinary and aimed at the development and dissemination of innovative, integrated geo-technologies in the fields of subsurface imaging, characterisation and engineering for cost-effective and sustainable utilisation of the subsurface.

The Section of Applied Geology aims to develop high-resolution quantitative models of geological heterogeneity in clastic sedimentary basins at different spatial scales. The models serve to enhance our understanding of clastic sedimentary systems as a whole, and will be applied in the discovery, use and sustainable management of subsurface resources. We strive to reduce the inherent uncertainty in numerical modelling by developing tools for quantitative prediction of key subsurface properties such as size, shape, spatial distribution and internal heterogeneity of sediment bodies.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Sediment grain-size data are routinely collected in many geoscientific surveys. In addition, estimates of sediment grain size may be derived from other measurements collected during surveys (‘proxies’). The information contained in such data may be used to build subsurface models for resource estimation, hydrological analysis, and hydrocarbon production. The first objective of this research project is to build a (geo)statistical toolbox comprising a set of Matlab scripts designed to be used by non-specialists. The toolbox includes: 1) estimation of grain-size parameters from proxy data; 2) reconstruction and interpolation of continuous particle-size distributions from discrete measurements; 3) geostatistical modelling of spatial variation in grain-size distributions (2-D and 3-D). Further research shall be carried out to 1) develop a method for extraction of residual sediment transport fields from spatial patterns of grain-size variability; 2) compare inferred residual transport fields to morphological data sets, and conduct process-based simulations of sediment transport and morphodynamics.

REQUIREMENTS

Candidates should have an MSc in Earth Sciences (Geology, Geophysics, Physical Geography) or Civil Engineering (Engineering Geology, Hydraulic Engineering, Petroleum Engineering). We specifically invite applications from candidates with demonstrable experience in one or more of the following fields: (geo)statistical modelling, computer programming (e.g. Matlab) and modelling of sediment transport/morphodynamics.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

The successful candidate will be employed by Delft University of Technology for a fixed period of four years within which he/she is expected to write a doctoral thesis.

TU Delft offers an attractive benefits package, including a flexible work week, free high-speed Internet access from home, and the option of assembling a customized compensation and benefits package (the ‘IKA’). Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.

Delft University of Technology strives to increase the number of women in higher academic positions; women are therefore especially encouraged to apply.

APPLICATION

To apply, please send a detailed CV along with a letter of application by 15 April, 2009 to: recruitment-citg@tudelft.nl

Admission requirements

LUMA-GIS program applications as well as individual course applications are handled by studera.nu. No applications can be sent directly to Lund University.

Note that you are allowed to apply for both the LUMA-GIS program and one or more individual courses. Normally, it is much more difficult to get admission to the program. However, you can apply several times, and when you get in you can include passed individual courses in your Master’s degree.

General requirements

You need a higher secondary certificate that gives access to university studies in your home country and an internationally recognized test of English if your mother tongue is another language. If there are any specific requirements, they are indicated under each course.

The courses are entirely conducted in English. To be admitted, non-Nordic candidates, whose mother tongue is other than English, will have to prove their proficiency in English by submitting appropriate documents. This is done by providing results from internationally recognized tests, i.e, TOEFL (at least 550 or 213 for paper-based and computer-based TOEFL test respectively), IELTS (at least 6.0) or the Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency.

For Nigeria, Ghana, Gambia, Liberia, Sierra Leone and parts of Cameroun, results from the West African Examination Council (WAEC) are sufficient (O-level and/or A-level).

Official transcripts and Diplomas/Certificates of your higher secondary and university studies in sealed envelopes must be sent directly to studera.nu (where you fill in the application) by your University/College. Please note that both Diplomas and specifications are required. Photo copies will not be considered.

When your application is registered you can follow the admission process on-line.

Also see section Technical Prerequisite for computer requirements:
http://luma.gis.lu.se/technical.htm

Additional requirements for the LUMA-GIS program

The program is at the Master’s level, and consequently, all applicants must have successfully completed at least a Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent – at least 3 years university studies) in any discipline in order to be considered. No special importance will be placed for students with specific academic backgrounds (or profession), and students from all faculties are welcome to apply.

During the selection process, academic grades, as well as other merits, such as letters of recommendation and “statements of purpose” will be considered. There will be no discrimination regarding the country of origin, the academic background and the gender of the applicants.

If there are more qualified applicants than places students will be selected based on the following criteria/documents:

1. The general average of your Bachelor degree,
2. Other relevant university degrees (e.g. MSc and/or PhD),
3. Working experience in related field,
4. Statement of purpose,
5. Recommendation letters.

Go to the application page for more information on how to apply for the LUMA-GIS program:

http://luma.gis.lu.se/apply.htm

Additional information for individual courses from LUMA-GIS

If there are more applicants than places students will be selected from different groups decided by the University Board:

1. The general average (GPA) of your higher secondary school leaving certificate (largest group and in fact the only one for students living outside Sweden),
2. The Swedish national university aptitude test which will be automatically transferred to the university,
3. Previous college/university studies.

Department of Geography University of Zurich is looking for PhD studentship on Glaciology, Geomorphodynamics and Geochronology. We are seeking a PhD candidate for the project CRYOSUB: Mountain Cryosphere Subgrid Parameterization and Computation, starting 1 March or 1 April 2009.

The expected outcome of this project is a method that allows for continental- scale modeling of permafrost, snow and glacier mass balance in mountain areas under present and simulated future climate. This is important because the mountain cryosphere influences a large proportion of the global land mass and population, experiences high rates of climate change and is currently inadequately resolved in regional climate models due to the dominating influence of sub-grid variability. This project will provide a proof of concept for the inclusion of topography sub-grid schemes into climate models as well as applications of mountain cryosphere models over large mountain ranges.

Applicants are required to have successfully completed a Masters level degree in a relevant area, e.g., Climatology, Meteorology, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Computational Geography or Earth Sciences. Programming skills (low level such as C/FORTRAN and high level such as Matlab/IDL) and experience with GIS are important assets. You have a very good standard of written and spoken English and will be working in a heterogeneous and multi-disciplinary environment. Mountaineering skills are welcome. You will receive the standard PhD salary according to the Swiss National Science Foundation. Curriculum Vitae, transcripts and contact details (including e-mail addresses and phone numbers) for two references should be sent with your letter of application to:
