Duration of contract: 1 May 2009 – 28 February 2013

Aim of the project
We propose a series of studies (Joint Programme of Research) directed at understanding the mechanisms underlying the development and progression of cardiovascular disease. We intend to develop, validate and apply a novel method of integrated measurement of arterial function and sympathetic nervous system activity in humans. The Joint Programme of Research (JPR) will consist of two research packages:

JPR 1. Development and validation of a new method of integrated measurement of arterial function and sympathetic nervous system activity.

JPR 2. Application of this new method in studies assessing:

determinants of sympathetic neural traffic in normal humans and hypertensive patients;

baroreflex function in healthy humans and patients with hypertension, particularly those with resistant hypertension.

cardiovascular risk stratification in patients with history of transient ischaemic attack (TIA);

cardiovascular regulation in patients with obstructive sleep apnea.

How to apply?

Candidates fulfilling requirements (see below) and willing to participate in the TEAM research project should send required documents to Prof. Krzysztof Narkiewicz (e-mail address: knark@amg.gda.pl) before March 23rd 2009, writing “TEAM” as the message subject. Please specify the position of your interest (#1, #2, #3, #4, #5 or #6).

Candidates should put in their application a declaration of permission for personal data treatment required for recruitment procedure.

Applications received after the deadline will not be considered in the competition process.

Recruitment procedure

Recruitment for the project will be carried out in an open, two-step procedure. Candidates’ merits will be judged both qualitatively as well as quantitatively. The first step of the recruitment will be based on the review of the submitted applications. The second step of the recruitment procedure – interview of the selected candidates – will be carried out on March 30,_2009. Successful candidates will be notified within 1 week after the interview. Results of the contest will be made public (www) on April 10, 2009. The decisions are final and appeals are not considered.

We intend to build a system with 4-5 superconducting qubits based on a superconducting type of qubit called transmon. We use tunable superconducting cavities to couple the qubits, and each qubit has its own individual control and read-out. The read-out will also be done using superconducting cavities. The main focus for the new post-doc will be to design and develop the read-out system. The position is financed by the EU-project EuroSQIP.

Topic:
Pathway-based tumour characterisation by alignment against cell panels along multiple molecular dimensions.

Research:
Astra Zeneca Oncology has constructed large cell panels to serve as in vitro models for drug response. These cell panels have been extensively characterized by mutation analysis, mRNA expression, aCGH, response to a wide variety of drugs, micro-RNA expression and phosphoprotein characterization. In parallel, the same measurements are being performed on a collection of colorectal samples. In this project two aims are pursued. First, a comparative analysis will be performed between the cell line data and the tumor data to determine the multi-dimensional molecular states spanned by the cell lines and whether these states faithfully recapitulate the space spanned by a representative and clinically relevant selection of tumor samples. Guided by this mapping and by following a pathway-based approach, integrative modeling will be applied on the cell line panel data to construct models predictive of resistance.

Job description:

The successful candidate will be responsible for the bioinformatics analysis of the cell line and tissue data. More specifically, these tasks include

Constructing a comprehensive gene list of the PI3K and ERK network;

Molecular characterisation of the colorectal cell panel and tumour samples through integrative analysis of the various data sources within the space spanned by the identified network genes and

Pathway-based alignment of cell panel to tumours to determine the extent to which the cell panel recapitulates the heterogeneity in the tissue set.

Location:

The position is embedded within the Bioinformatics and statistics group lead by Dr Lodewyk Wessels (http://bioinformatics.nki.nl) at the Netherlands Cancer Institute, Amsterdam and the Oncology Informatics group, Discovery Medicine, Astra Zeneca, Alderley Park, UK lead by Dr Tim French. We plan to have regular meetings, and the postdoc will also spend time at both locations.

Requirements:

Candidates should fulfill the following criteria.

MSc or PhD in one of the following areas: bioinformatics, engineering, computer science, statistics, physics, biotechnology, or biology.

Knowledge of fundamental aspects of cancer biology, especially signalling pathways.

Knowledge of fundamental aspects of computer science (algorithms and data structures, programming languages).

Knowledge or experience of informatics.

Knowledge of statistics, artificial intelligence or bioinformatics is highly desirable.

Conditions of Employment:

The successful candidate will be employed by the Netherlands Cancer Institute. The employment conditions follow general employment rules as laid down in the ‘CAO’ for hospitals. The salary will be determined depending on education and experience.

(4) Research Justification

A description of the relationship of your research to Beckman Institute research programs, including identification of specific faculty members with whom you intend to associate and needs for experimental facilities or other resources. Faculty members at the University of Illinois who are possible research collaborators, but who are not Beckman Institute faculty, may also be mentioned. It is strongly recommended that you contact in advance one or more of the faculty with whom you might collaborate. This section should not exceed two single-spaced pages. The Research Justification must be submitted as an Adobe PDF file using the upload form mentioned above.

(5) Representative Paper (Optional)
