The Division of Fibre Technology is looking for a Ph.D. candidate in Tailored fibres with unique joint-forming ability using a biomimetic approach

KTH is the largest technical university in Sweden. Education and research cover a broad spectrum within natural sciences and engineering, as well as architecture, industrial engineering and management, urban planning, work science and environmental engineering. There are circa 13,300 full-year undergraduate students, 1,500 postgraduate students and 3,900 employees.

The School of Chemical Science and Engineering includes the areas Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Fibre and Polymer technology. We focus on the principles for design, analysis and understanding of molecular systems plus their application on, for example, bioorganic materials, energy transformation processes, the environment and production of chemicals and pharmaceuticals. KTH Chemical Science and Engineering are one of the most active in research among technical faculties in Sweden and we are in the frontline within our areas. We also offer education as Master of Engineering and bachelor’s degree.

Research subject

The objective of the project is fiberbased products with unique mechanical properties. This should be met by tailoring the joint between the fibres so that the fibrous materials can tolerate a large strain during network preparation while being ductile/stiff/wet-strong in their final application. The scientific challenge will be to molecularly modify the cellulose-based fibres and fibrils in a well defined way to achieve the desired properties. Among other strategies, biomimicking will be used to adapt similar strategies as that used by mussel and Gecco-lizards that lead to extremely durable joints to slippery and flat surfaces both under wet and also dry conditions. The research area has a multidisciplinary character where physical chemistry is mixed both with biomechanics and solid mechanics.

The PhD student will be a member of BiMaC Innovation, a strategic research centre at KTH financed by the industry and Vinnova with the outspoken ambition to produce new and improved products from the wood raw material. One of the main strategies with the centre is to become a world leading biomaterials research centre by combining different generic sciences at the KTH campus such as solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, physical chemistry and fibre and polymer technology. The centre is now entering its second phase which means that the infrastructure for cooperation between the different schools at the KTH campus is already established. The PhD student in Fibre Technology will hence be member of a interdisciplinary team allowing for a more efficient development of new materials from the wood raw material.

Qualifications

MSc in Surface Chemistry/Surface Physics , Chemistry or Chemical Engineering or similar. Special qualifications in Fibre Technology, Surface and Colloid Science or Polymer Chemistry will be regarded as an advantage . An ambition and ability to improve the competence in solid mechanics ia also a prerequisite for the position and oral and written communication skills in English are also important.
Applicants must be strongly motivated for doctoral studies, possess the ability to work independently and perform critical analysis as well as possessing good levels of cooperative and communicative abilities.

KTH aims to employ a diversity of talent and thus welcomes applicants who will add to the variety of the University, especially as concerns its gender structure.

Employment

Form of employment: Time-limited
Start time: according to agreement

Application

The application should be sent in hard copy to:
KTH Skolan för kemivetenskap

The Quota Scheme is Norway’s and NTNU’s largest loan and scholarship scheme for financing students from eligible developing countries, and countries in Central and Eastern Europe/ Central Asia.

You may be eligibile for Quota Scheme support if you are either a student or temporarily or permanently employed at one of the institutions where NTNU has a collaborative agreement. These institutions are mainly found in developing countries or in Central and Eastern Europe/ Central Asia. Please refer to the list of institutions. The deadline for submission of the preliminary application is December 1, 2009.

To be ellgible, you must also have stayed at least one year in your home country directly prior to when you plan to undertake your education at NTNU or any other Norwegian university/ college. That means you cannot apply for financial support directly from a country than your own.

NTNU has been granted 168 seats (157 for developing countries, and 11 for Central and Eastern Europe/ Central Asia) for the academic years 2008-2009, 2009-2010 and 2010-2011.However, there are only about 60-65 new seats each year under the Quota Scheme at NTNU. The rest of NTNU’s Quota Scheme seats are used for students who are already admitted at our university, and who need renewal of Quota Scheme support to complete their studies.

The few Quota Scheme seats available, compared with the very high number of applicants competing for new seats, makes this source of funding support extremely competitive. Only very qualified candidates from collaborating institutions will therefore be offered admission.

Overview
What Does It Cover

The Quota Scheme covers living expenses while studying in Norway, travel allowances according to fixed national rates at minimum student price, support to cover fieldwork periods in the students’ home country as part of the study programme in Norway, and additional support for children when they are staying together with the student in Norway.

At the moment the yearly support is NOK 87 600 for students at undergraduate and graduate programmes (NOK 8 760 per month for 10 months per year). A major part of the support (60 %) is given as a loan, that will only be waived if the student is permanently settling down in his or her home country after completing the education in Norway. A minor part (40 %) is given as a scholarship.

As it might take up to two months after arrival to receive the loan and scholarship, it is necessary that the students provide themselves with sufficient fund to cover their expenses in Norway for the first two months. This would amount to approximately NOK 14 000, because you have to take into consideration the living expenses, including the house rent, an accommodation deposit of NOK 3 000 to the Student Welfare Organisation, cost of books, and a minor semester fee (Approximately NOK 450).

If you are following a normal study progression, the financial support will usually be renewed every year until you have completed your education, meaning for a normal study period of 2 years duration on the condition that you are present at NTNU in Trondheim. An additional 3rd year support under the Quota Scheme can be granted in cases where the MSc/MPhil student is academically delayed in his/her studies (child birth, sickness etc during the study period). Please note that according to the regulations, students who are pregnant at arrival will not be granted maternity scholarship.

The regulations under the Quota Scheme says that if the student permanently settle down in his or her home country, the loan will be waived as a form of Norwegian governmental development assistance to the student’s home country. Students who are not following the intentions behind the scheme, and who settle in another country after having completed their education in Norway, are expected to repay the loan on the same conditions as Norwegian citizens.

Admission requirements under the quota scheme

For admission under the Quota Scheme, NTNU will only consider candidates attached to one of NTNU’s collaboration institutions for admission to our international master’s programmes. Applicants will be asked to indicate that they belong to at least one of the following categories in the electronic preliminary application database to be able to proceed with their application for Quota Scheme support:

a) Permanently employed at one of NTNU’s collaboration institutions.

b) Temporary employed at one of NTNU’s collaboration institutions

c) Presently studying at one of NTNU’s collaboration institutions

d) Graduates with a first degree from one of NTNU’s collaboration institutions.

Applicants belonging to the categories a), b), or c) will be given the highest priority in admission under the Quota Scheme.

One general requirement for admission to our international master’s programmes, is that applicants must have completed a minimum of 3 years of recognised university studies beyond the basic matriculation requirement for admission at Norwegian universities/ colleges relevant for their home country. Usually this will require that the applicants must have completed a specialised first degree/ bachelor’s degree of at least 4 years duration within a relevant academic area.

For some international master’s programmes relevant work experience may also be considered relevant for admission. Please notice that applicants who have obtained only a 2-3 years Diploma/ Higher National Diploma degree, at Polytechnics/ college level, do not qualify for admission to our international master’s programmes.

Before applying, please study the academic requirements for the international master’s programme you are interested in applying for carefully (see academic requirements for each of the master’s programmes at our web pages: http://www.ntnu.no/international/master ).

English language requirement for applicants under the Quota Scheme:

http://www.ntnu.no/studies/langcourses/languagerequirements

An electronic version of the preliminary application form is available at the home page of the Office of International Relations. The evaluation of the applicants’ background will be based on the information given in the electronic preliminary application form. Applicants should therefore use some time when filling in all the questions in the database, and be careful to give correct information. The information on the electronic preliminary application form, will later be checked against the educational and other required documents submitted with the final application form for those of the candidates who have passed through the preliminary application screening.

Within the Membrane Technology Group of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Twente, we have a PhD positions for a project entitled: “Membrane-based olefin/paraffin separation: A route to energy efficient separation technology”.

Membrane technology is an attractive, energy efficient alternative for molecular separations because of its high energy efficiency, reliability, and small foot print. The separation of olefins and paraffins, traditionally performed in large distillation columns, is one of the currently most energy intensive separation processes in the petrochemical industry and the energy savings obtainable with membrane technology are significant. In the present project we develop membranes for the energy efficient separation of especially lower olefins and paraffins.

The focus of this project is on the development of new carbon membranes for gas separation and on the determination of the structure properties relationship. The project integrates and combines the practical experience and the more, but far from complete fundamental understanding on polymeric olefin/paraffin separation membranes with the more explorative knowledge on carbon membranes. The combination of these aspects offers new ways towards the development of highly selective and permeable membranes for the separation of olefins and paraffins at higher feed pressures and temperatures.

The project is a collaboration between 7 partners ranging from research institutes (University of Twente, ECN, University of Düsseldorf) to industrial membrane developers (Hyflux CEPAration BV, SolSep BV) and the chemical industry (Shell Global Solutions and Dow Benelux BV).

Profile

We are looking for highly motivated and enthusiastic researchers with an MSc degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, material science or a related topic, with adequate experimental and theoretical skills.

We prefer candidates with a good team spirit, who like to work in an internationally oriented environment. Fluency in English is a requirement. An interview and a scientific presentation will be part of the selection procedure.

Offer

We offer a scientific education on a multidisciplinary subject. The assignment is for 4 years, with a go/no-go assessment at the end of the first year. The candidates are expected to finish the project with a PhD thesis and disseminate the results through patents (if applicable), publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at international conferences. Your starting salary will be € 2042, – in the first year and up to € 2612, – gross per month in the last year.

Information and application

For more information, please contact Dr. ir.
Title: Experimental Measurement and Modeling of the Thermodynamic Properties of Electrolyte Solutions with chemical equilibrium.

Keywords: thermodynamics, statistical physics, molecular simulation, energy and process engineering.

Location: ENSTA, Chemical Engineering Dept., 32 Boulevard Victor, 75015 Paris, France.

Supervisors: Walter Fürst and Patrice Paricaud.

Electrolyte solutions are encountered in many industrial applications, and the determination of their thermodynamic properties is often crucial to the design and optimization of chemical processes Because of strong deviations from ideality in these solutions, the prediction of thermodynamic propréiétés of these systems remains a challenge. The modeling of these systems implies using molecular based models and the laws of statistical thermodynamics.

The thermodynamic models are usually extensions of models for nonelectrolyte mixtures obtained by adding a specific term to take into account the electrostatic interactions between ions. However, these models are accurate only if they also take into account the interactions between ions and molecular species, i.e. the phenomena of solvation of ions by solvent molecules.

The aim of the thesis is twofold. First, it consists of the development of a new model incorporating a term for the original representation of solvation. The development of this new model can be made with the help of data generated by molecular simulation. As in the case of an equation of state electrolyte previously developed in our laboratory, the model should have predictive features.

Secondly, we will apply the thermodynamic model to systems with a strong industrial interest and exhibiting chemical equilibria (sulfur-iodine cycle for hydrogen production, solvent mixtures, metal complexes, absorption of acid gases, …). This part of the work will use data from the literature and new speciation measurements. These new measurements will provide the experimental aspect of the thesis.

This thesis wil allow students to deepen their knowledge in many scientific areas: thermodynamics, statistical physics, condensed matter, numerical methods and experimental measurements.

Candidates should have strong skills in mathematics, numerical methods, statistical physics and thermodynamics, allowing them to be autonome. Experience in programming and modeling of phase equilibria will be particularly appreciated.
