Selection process:

A Faculty selection committee will review the applications. Students are selected on the basis of academic merit. Decisions as to eligibility for awarding a scholarship are made in April and May 2009 (for the September 2009 intake). Applicants will be informed around 15 May 2009.

Please note

Students should be aware that the LExS is not a full scholarship. It is necessary to find additional funding to be able to finance their study and stay completely.

One of the requirements for being granted a residence permit in the Netherlands is that students must submit proof that they have sufficient financial means to finance their study period in the Netherlands. Leiden University advises a budget, not including the tuition fee, of approx. €10,000 to €14,000 per year to cover the costs for rent, insurance, living expenses, course books and local transportation. How much money students actually spend will of course depend on their life style and spending habits.

Social and Cultural Change in Muslim Contexts

Knowledge Construction in Fields Related to Understanding Cultures

Programme Description

The research fellowship programme at AKU-ISMC commences in September and offers a unique opportunity to pursue research within an intellectually stimulating and supportive environment. Fellows play an active role in the intellectual life of the Institute, participating in a wide range of seminars, workshops, and conferences. They also enjoy the opportunity of interacting with distinguished faculty at the Institute and from other academic institutions in the United Kingdom. The duration of each fellowship is one year. During this time, candidates explore and shed new light on a specific dimension of one of the Institute’s two major research themes: social and cultural change in Muslim contexts or knowledge construction in the fields related to understanding cultures. These two themes are deliberately open ended and broad in their scope to enable a diverse range of research topics. One example of a research topic that has been derived from the first theme as an area of specific interest at the Institute is the idea of cities as environments for social and cultural change.

The present cohort of fellows (2008/2009) is working on various aspects of social change by examining the dynamics of networks and institutions in Muslim contexts. During the course of this academic year, the Institute will facilitate scholarly dialogue among the research fellows and senior academics who have contributed to the discourse related to civil society and social change within Muslim contexts.

The fellows are expected to produce a research paper on the theme of their fellowship topic, to a standard that is publishable by a quality academic journal, and that can be published in the Institute’s academic publications series. During the course of their fellowship they are required to participate in the educational programmes of the Institute by delivering lectures and seminars as required. Fellows will also contribute to the Institute’s various seminar and discussion series by giving lectures and presenting papers to faculty, students and staff.

Research fellows are also expected to contribute the Muslim Civilisations Abstracts (http://www.aku.edu/ismc/abp.shtml) project by writing abstracts and editing papers.

Requirements:

Candidates should have:

A PhD in the Humanities or Social Sciences;

A high degree of interest and competence in one of the above research areas;

A high level of proficiency in communication skills, written and verbal;

An International English Language Testing System (ELTS) score of at least 6.5 or equivalent is essential.

Funding:

The gross fellowship stipend is £20,000. In addition to the stipend, Fellows from outside the UK will receive a reimbursement of travel expenses for a one-way restricted economy class ticket from their home base to London and single accommodation or a contribution of £800 per month towards a rental accommodation. Other benefits and facilities include: a research grant of up to £500, office space, access to AKU-ISMC’s library and the libraries of neighbouring academic institutions, and access to computer facilities.

Cluster of Excellence for “Religion and Politics”

Up to ten PhD opportunities available in the Cluster of Excellence for “Religion and Politics” at the University of Münster, Germany

An exciting opportunity exists for potential PhD students to fill up to ten positions by April 1, 2009 in the interdisciplinary Cluster of Excellence for “Religion and Politics in Pre-Modern and Modern Cultures” at the Westfälische Wilhelms-University , Münster, Germany. The Cluster involves a large number of academics from the areas of History, Catholic and Protestant Theology, Jurisprudence, as well having capacity in the areas of Islamic Studies, Philosophy, Philology, Political Science, and the Sociology of Religion. Projects in the Cluster are grouped around four themes: Normativity, Staging, Integrative Procedures, and Violence.

There are currently up to ten positions available in the Graduate School within the Cluster. Each of these positions is attached to a stipend based on half a E13 TV-L position (approximately € 900 per month). Initially the positions are available for two years, with an extension of a further year possible. Besides from working on their own projects, PhD students are expected to participate in the planning and organization of conferences as well as the running of workshops within the Graduate School. These workshops are expected to cover such areas as theory, methods, lectures, and the interpretation of source material.

We are seeking students fluent in German who have demonstrated exceptional ability in the Humanities, Cultural Studies, Social Sciences, Law/Jurisprudence, or Theology/Religious Studies. Furthermore we are particularly interested in attracting students who have demonstrated high competence in interdisciplinary studies, have proven their ability to communicate their research to a variety of forums, and have the potential to establish themselves in international arenas.

Applicants are requested to provide a five page description of their intended project (including a bibliography) . It is expected that the project will complement the research aims and also one or more of the themes of the Cluster. Applicants with appropriate research topics from all eras of history, across a wide range of study areas, geographical locations, and themes will be considered. However, we are particularly interested in receiving expressions of interest from applicants interested in antiquities or the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

We explicitly encourage women to apply. The applications of women with equal aptitude, qualification and academic achievements will be given priority, provided there are no prevailing reasons to the contrary that arise from a competing candidate’s personality. Severely handicapped candidates with equal qualifications will be preferred.

Please send your application, including cover letter, CV, copies of transcripts, a project description, and two academic references by January 31, 2009 to the Coordinator of the Graduate School in the Cluster of Excellence:
