International Students are eligible for need-based and merit-based financial aid, and are encouraged to apply. At Colby-Sawyer we strive to acknowledge the abilities and accomplishments of our students. Through a variety of scholarships and awards, the college recognizes academic achievement, community service and leadership experience.

Academic Scholarships
These awards acknowledge students who have reached a high level of academic achievement throughout their high school career. With the exception of the Wesson Honors Scholarship, there is neither a separate application or deadline for these scholarships. As part of our rolling admissions process, students will be informed of the award decision at the point of acceptance. For international students, the admissions committee will recalculate your GPA based on equivalent letter and number grades from the Official High School Transcript you submit.

Wesson Honors Scholarship – up to $64,000 over four years
Students with a 3.75 GPA are eligible to apply for the Wesson Honors Scholarship. This $16,000 per year scholarship includes direct admission into the Wesson Honors Program. It is renewable annually for four years of study dependent upon good academic standing in the Wesson Honors Program. The deadline to apply for the Wesson Honors Program is February 1, 2011.

Founders Scholarship – up to $60,000 over four years
Students with a 3.5 GPA are eligible for the Founders Scholarship. Students receiving this $15,000 per year award have graduated from high school with honors level classes and a rigorous college preparatory program. It is renewable annually for four years of study dependent upon maintaining a 3.3 GPA while enrolled at Colby-Sawyer.

Presidential Scholarship – up to $48,000 over four years
Students with a 3.3 GPA are eligible for the Presidential Scholarship. This $12,000 award is renewable annually for four years of study dependent upon full-time enrollment and maintaining a 3.0 GPA.

Chargers Scholarship – up to $40,000 over four years
Students who have a minimum 3.0 GPA are eligible for this award. This $10,000 per year award and is renewable annually for four years dependent upon full-time enrollment and maintaining a 2.75 GPA.

Merit Based Awards
Colby-Sawyer offers Merit based scholarships to incoming students based on their high school academic record, leadership qualities and community service involvement. These awards are not based on need and are renewable each year as long as the student remains in good academic standing. Students are eligible to apply for merit awards at any point, including prior to being accepted.

Colby-Sawyer Grant
Grant assistance is given to students based on their financial need, as well as their academic performance. Students receiving grant assistance from the college may expect to receive similar grant awards each year as long as family circumstances do not change, all application deadlines are met, and the student remains in good social and academic standing.

The Institute for Humane Studies Scholarships of up to $12,000 are awarded to undergraduate or graduates to study in the United States or abroad.

About 120 scholarships are awarded to outstanding undergraduate, graduate, law, and professional students who are exploring the principles, practices, and institutions necessary to a free society through their academic work.

Each year IHS award scholarships to students from universities around the world and sponsors the attendance of hundreds of students at its summer seminars and other educational programs.

All qualified men and women will be considered for Humane Studies Fellowships without regard to race, religion, national or ethnic origin, citizenship, or handicap.

Although IHS considers applications from outside the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, fellowships are generally awarded to applicants who live, or are studying, in those countries.

Application deadline: December 31.

For further details, and application materials, contact Institute for Humane Studies Scholarships Website at:
http://www.theihs.org/ContentDetails.aspx?id=491

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Who is eligible for the Humane Studies Fellowships?

The following individuals are eligible for the Humane Studies Fellowships:

Individuals who will be undergraduate juniors or seniors during the academic year of funding

Graduate students in any field

Fellowship awards can be used to study in any country.

Country of origin and country of study have no bearing on eligibility.

In order to receive Fellowship awards, winners must be full-time, enrolled students at accredited degree-granting institutions for the entire period of the award. For the purposes of the Fellowship, ‘full-time’ is defined as an applicant’s home institution defines it.

Humane Studies Fellowships are awarded for one year. Winners are eligible to reapply in subsequent years. There is no limit on how many awards an individual may receive.

How can I apply for the Humane Studies Fellowship?

Applications are accepted online only. The online application can be found here. Paper copies of the application are not available.

What if my score report is no longer available from the testing service?

An official score report is not required. Your department or university may have a copy of your score report on file. A copy of the score report from your personal files is also acceptable.

What transcripts are required for the Fellowship application?

We require your most recent university transcript. If you are in the first year of a graduate program and do not have a transcript for your current university, please send your undergraduate transcripts. Official transcripts are not required.

My college or university does not issue transcripts. What do I do?

Please send other appropriate documentation that rates the quality of your academic work.

I cannot obtain transcripts from my university. Am I still eligible?

If you cannot obtain transcripts, you remain eligible. However, failure to submit documents limits our ability to thoroughly evaluate your application, and may affect your chances of being named a Fellow.

What is required for the letters of recommendation?

We require the names and email addresses of two (2) and not more than three (3) individuals who will write letters of recommendation on your behalf. Your recommenders should be able to comment on your intellectual and scholarly ability, your chance of success in your chosen career path, and your ability to contribute to the understanding of the principles, practices and institutions necessary to a free society.

IHS will contact your recommenders shortly after you submit your application, and we will ask them to send the letters directly to us by January 19, 2010.

Can letters of recommendation be sent separately to IHS?

Yes. If your recommenders wish to send their letters before we contact them, they may do so either by email or by surface mail.

Emails should be sent to HSF@TheIHS.org

For surface mail, the envelope should be signed across the seal and sent to:

Institute for Humane Studies
Attn: Humane Studies Fellowships
3301 N. Fairfax Dr., Ste. 440
Arlington VA 22201

Can your system send out letters of recommendation before the deadline?

No, the system will send out requests for letters of recommendation only after you have submitted your application. The deadline for recommenders to submit their letters is January 19, 2010.

Can my recommender send in the letter via US Mail?

No, we greatly prefer that your recommender send the letter via email.

Do all Fellows receive $12,000?

No. IHS makes Fellowship awards from $2,000 to $12,000. To determine the size of an award, we consider the cost of tuition at a student’s institution and other funds the student may receive.

How many Fellowships are awarded each year?

The number of Fellowships awarded in a year varies according to the strength of the applicant pool. In recent years, we have awarded between 110 and 160 Fellowships.

How will I know that my application is complete?

We will send you an email indicating your application is complete. If anything is missing, we will contact you directly to request the missing documents.

I do not have all required documents and information for the application. May I still apply?

Yes. However, failure to submit documents limits our ability to thoroughly evaluate your application, and may affect your chances of being named a Fellow.

If I win a Fellowship, will it automatically be renewed each year?

Fellowships are awarded through a competitive process each year. Previous winners must reapply in order to be considered.

May Humane Studies Fellowships be used to study abroad?

Yes. Fellowships may be used for study at degree-granting institutions anywhere in the world.

When is the deadline to apply for the Fellowship?

The deadline to apply for the 2010-11 Fellowships is December 31, 2009.

Will materials that are postmarked after December 31, such as test scores or transcripts, be considered?

We will not accept any supporting documents, such as transcripts, score verifications or writing samples postmarked or emailed after January 22. Please endeavor to make your application complete before this date.

When will decisions be announced?

Decisions will be announced in two stages. In March, you will receive an update announcing whether you are a finalist under consideration. In early May, we will announce final decisions.

Can my Fellowship award be deferred?

No. Fellowship awards cannot be deferred. Only individuals who are enrolled full-time for the entire period of the award can collect the award. Those who do not enroll in a university for the period of the Fellowship forfeit the award.

One six-month fellowship is available for a female social scientist from a developing nation, either pre- or post-doctoral, whose work addresses women’s economic and social empowerment in that nation. Adobe PDF IconDownload the flier (292 KB)The goal of the program is twofold: to advance the scholarly careers of women social scientists from the developing world, and to support research that identifies causes of gender inequity in the developing world and that proposes practical solutions for promoting women’s economic and social empowerment.

In addition to a $4,500/month stipend and housing and office space on the SAR campus, the Campbell Fellow receives travel, shipping, and library resource funds; health insurance; and the support of a mentoring committee of established scholar-practitioners.

The following criteria guide SAR’s selection of the Campbell Fellow:

Citizenship: Applicants may not be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and must be a national of a developing country that is currently eligible to borrow from the World Bank.

Academic Discipline: Applicants should be pursuing research in one of the social sciences: anthropology, economics, education, geography, history, law, linguistics, political science, psychology, social work, or sociology, or in an interdisciplinary field that incorporates two or more of these disciplines.

Research Topic: Projects that identify causes of and/or solutions to gender inequity in the developing world, and thus contribute to women’s social and economic empowerment, will be favored. Sample topics include education and socialization of girls; globalization and the economic status of women; policies and practices toward family, reproduction, and women’s health; impacts of international and civil conflict on women; women’s roles in resolving such conflicts or sustaining civil society; media representations of women and the formation of ideologies of gender; the practice and process of gender-based development; and women in science and technology. SAR will select fellows on the strength of their clearly stated intention to serve their communities and countries of origin.

English Fluency: To facilitate full engagement in the SAR intellectual community, applicants must demonstrate their fluency in English, such as through their record of professional interaction in written and spoken English.
