The Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry with its parent Institutions, the Universities of Exeter and Plymouth, are seeking to attract PhD candidates of outstanding ability to join their exciting and rapidly expanding programme of internationally rated research.

As part of our new developments and our commitment to research excellence, applications are invited from suitably qualified graduates, 2:1 or above, for a PhD studentship. International students must also have IELTS [International English Language Testing System] score of 7 and above (or equivalent qualification).

The diabetic and pre-diabetic states are associated with several alterations to normal physiology which may influence the normal processes of the insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells. In this project, the successful candidate will investigate the effect of factors such as hyperglycaemia, hyperlipidaemia and oxidative stress on the total expression, alternative splicing and epigenetic silencing of a number of candidate genes in a variety of tissues appropriate to diabetes.

The successful candidate is likely to have an interest in RNA biology, particularly as it relates to diabetes and metabolism. Experience in tissue culture, RNA extraction, RT-PCR, quantitative real-time PCR or analysis of DNA methylation would be an advantage.

Closing date for application: 20th May 2009. Start date: 1st October 2009
